Welcome to North Adams!

The Mohawk or Kanien’kehá:ka people were the native inhabitants of North Adams and surrounding communities. They were one original members of the Iroquois Confederacy.

Once a manufacturing powerhouse in the late 19th century and early 20th century, it has transformed itself into the cultural hub of the Northern Berkshires.

North Adams is home to MASS MoCA, the largest contemporary art museum in the United States. As a global art destination, it attracts tens of thousands of visitors from around the world each year.

There is also a flourishing community of local artists living in North Adams. The Eclipse and Beaver Mills have been remade into artists’ lofts. Local art galleries include the Ferrin Contemporary, Eckert Fine Art, MCLA’s Gallery 51, Future Lab(s), the Installation Space and more! Local art is supported by organizations like MASS MoCA’s Assets for Artists, the Cultural Council of Northern Berkshires and several local meetup groups.

The natural beauty of North Adams is one of the many reasons so many people are choosing to move and visit here. It’s nestled in the bottom of a valley surrounded by ancient green mountains of the Hoosac Range and Mount Greylock State Reservation. Downtown is threaded by two branches of the Hoosac River that once powered all the mills.
